Alright! After months of work, saving money, buying equipment, reading threads, books and magazines - finaly I have my first band that I'm about to record. They want solid demo recording. I dont have my own place for drum recording so I got to go to their garage for drum tracking. They want to record drums in the garage and everything else at my appartment(I'm from Europe-we have a strong brick walls). So I need an addvice from you guys about how to set up monitor mixes and any other addvice that you think it can help me!! These are the instruments: 1.Drums 2.bass 3.guitar 4.keyboard 5.vocal We are planning to have at least Bass and Guitar player to play their parts for the drummer while recording drums. This is the equipment: 1.Digi 001 2.1604 VLZ Mackie 3.compressor 266xl DBX(stereo) 4.Headphone distribution amp(4 channels) I got all the mic's that I need. I don't know if I should use VLZ 1604 for monitor mixes or digi001 and how shoud I set them up??? I also have Digimax LT but when I record enable tracks in PT I hear some peaks that are coming in in specific intervals like it is comming from the electricity or something even though the mic is not pluged in.Any ideas why?? That's why I decided to use Mackie's preamps. And how do I connect VLZ with digi001 when I want to use VLZ's preamps?? Thanks a million rate!!!!!!

Remains, I was in exactly your position in June, and we’re almost done with what has turned out to be a pretty good album. The other posters here have given some good advice, but I’d like to make a suggestion based on my own experience. Give the band their headphone mixes through your mixer, but monitor on your speakers through the Digi001. I made the mistake of monitoring the band through the mixer, and not through the 001, and the sounds (especially drums) were very different upon playback. I learned a lesson about the way that Digi sounds, and I’ve had to do quite a bit of EQ work to get my sounds back. I wont make the same mistake again. Good luck!
If you want to use the VLZ pres, use the Mackie's channel inserts to connect to the Digi's inputs. Basically, use the inserts as a send signal to your 001. If you list your mics, people can help you choose what to use where.
Just ordered my 001 and feel confident about my first Pro Tools session coming up next month with all of this great experience and advice right here to help me. I've done stuff on old reel-reel 4 and 8 tracks and recorded the old fashioned way. No comps or processing and did reverb and echo in tiled rooms and garages until the pioneer listed below was had at a garage sale...even used tape slap back. Now I have a hole new digital world to experiment in. The Band: Guitarist 1 - accoustic rythym / elctric lead Guitarist 2 - accoustic rythym Drums - Kick, Hi-Hat, Snare, 2 Toms, 1 crash Spoken Word Artist - (also) Bass, Keyboards, Cello The two guitarist switch off on songs for lead vocal or backup and the same for the Spoken Word Artist, depending on what song and what he does. They want to record as a live performance and add the extra's later. The Setup: Behringer 2406A 16 Channel w/ 8 mic pre's and phantom power. 001' and the goodies built in dbx project 1 Comp/Limit 2 ch dbx 255 comp/exp 2ch in 4 ch out Pioneer Spring Reverb 2ch in 4 ch out * *(i like cool old gear and adding it for mix down) Marshall Mic's: 1MXL 990 Studio Cond 2MXL V63M Studio Cond Nady Drum Mic Set: 4 DM 70's 1 DM 80 2 CM 88's Generic: 1 Astatic(made by shure 15 yrs ago)...(specs similar to SM57) Koss Headphones: 5 UR-20's I still need headphone distribution but will have to find away around till I fill my wallet back up. Lookin forward to advice, comments and suggestions Thanks Rough
