Fair greetings Even though I purchased Reaper quite a few months ago, Ive only really only recently started using it. Before Reaper, Ive used Cubase and then Podium, so Im not a complete newbie, even though two of my biggest problems Im having with Reaper may very much sound like newbie question. I'll post one of my issues here and the other in another thread later on. Panning - I cant get it to work at all. When I pan a track hard left or right, the only thing it does is slightly decrease volume. Scenario: on my hardware mixer, I mute the right channel. If I then pan any Reaper track hard left, it is still heard, albeit at a lower volume than if I have pan centered or hard right. Ive tried this on a softsynth (StringSynth v1.1 by AlgoMusic), two sample/rom players (Sonik Synth and SafFron by Fretted Synth Audio) as well as wav tracks of recorded guitars. The behaviour is the same on all above mentioned tracks. I seriously dont get it...or Im missing some fundamental settings. Im musing an E-mu 1212 card with their PatchMix DSP software for controlling routing (hardware and ASIO in and outs). If I pan the ASIO output track, it works normally. Im totally clueless...any ideas?
It sounds like you have the stereo/mono button, in the master track, set to mono. This button is locate just above the io button on the master track (press Ctrl M to view the mixer view).
That's a negative, sir. The Mixer is set to Stereo. I also had my suspicioun that it could be something with stereo/mono settings. I've also checked that no hardware outputs are routed anywhere and stuff like that.
Check to make sure that you don't have any pan automation engaged, also check to see what the output are set for on your tracks, reaper has very unique routing possibilities. I know you are not new to digital recording but I had a problem like this once before and in my case I had the 2 return channels on my tascam mixer coming from my daw set to mono instead of stereo so they both were receiving the same signal (operator error), as a last resort uninstall reaper and then reinstall it.
If this happens in a new project I would suspect the way you have your hardware hooked up, reaper just wouldn't do that by itself. Try unplugging one side of your stereo outs and see what happens, you should just get one side, if you don't, you know what's wrong. If that's okay then mute one channel in your sound card control panel - In fact try that first - to save unplugging .
Two things: 1. Sorry for the late reply (this is how often I get time to do music these days...) 2. Thanks! Problem solved. Issue was actually with the audio in/out controller software for the soundcard (E-MU).

Bump. I just switched to Reaper from my ancient Cubase and I'm having the same problem as described in the opening post. I've spent several hours trying to solve this in vain. First thing I did was importing a mono track from my Cubase project to Reaper but panning doesn't work at all. The channel & master VU meters react like they should but there's no audible effect apart from the slight decrease in volume at either side. My soundcard is RME HDSP 9632. Panning in Reaper has no effect in the RME's mixer panel (unlike with Cubase where everything has worked ok panning-wise). Reaper's routing configuration is at default - no receives or sends are used. I've checked preferences, io settings, routing map and HDSP Mixer's options. I could use a little help here - wouldn't care to return to the latency-ridden Cubase... :(

A simple project example is attached. Meanwhile I'll be laying down some bass tracks (which I need to do this week as I borrowed the bass from a friend) in the hope that I can get his solved. Otherwise I'll have to import everything back to Cubase and work there.
