Reaper Won't Trigger Specified MIDI Output

Hello. First post! I'm a recent convert from PT LE and a Digi 001 on an OS 9 Mac, circa 2000. I guess I'm a little hesitant to mess with something that isn't broken... My new(er) setup is a PC with an E-Mu 1212m running Patchmix, which is a nightmare, but manageable. Everything is going great, overall, with the best audio quality I've ever been able to achieve. My only issue thus far has to do with MIDI and my MOTU Micro Express 4 in/6 out USB interface, and the ability to transmit MIDI data to external sound modules. I have the latest MOTU XP driver installed, and everything is showing up correctly in Reaper. Although I believe I have all of the routing set up correctly to trigger output 5, channel 10 of my interface, the MOTU's front panel shows no MIDI data being received from Reaper. I have poured over the manual and the internet, but everything I read seems to indicate that the routing is set up correctly in Reaper. The MIDI I/O hardware output is set to output 5, channel 10. Physical connections are not the issue, and I am able to trigger the module on output 5 when I change the mode to live keys. But that triggers all channels, which is no good for sequencing. It's almost like there's a MIDI Thru box somewhere that needs to be checked! It seems like this should just be plug and play, so if any of you have any ideas to help me get this fixed, I would love to hear them! In the long term, I'm going to use Reaper to tackle the ambitious task of step-recording 10-12 tunes for full big band. Or die trying...

Hi and welcome here. First things first as it's not specifically mentioned in your post, have you enabled the outputs in Midi Devices in Preferences? Also remember that tracks need to be armed in order to activate the sends etc, so double check that too.

Well if by 'live mode' (not sure what this is) you get signal out and in, then obviously there's nothing wrong with the signal path per se. I suggest loading a simple midi file on a track and testing with that to avoid the input part of the setup for now, then in the IO settings for the track, try to send its signal to different hardware outputs and on different channels in order to get something. If still nothing, best is to take some screenshots of your Reaper settings and posting them here.

Nice fix with the MOTU and sorting the Reaper settings (which we should have known could be the cause, but..) And cheers for concluding the thread, makes it a useful reference.
