I usually attempt a pass with DVDShrink, even if the compression is down around 50%. It rarely turns out good enough, but occasionally it does and it doesn't take long. The more backups I do, the more I feel that if Shrink can't put it on one disk, it needs to be split to two. In most cases, I find the overall quality of Shrink to be superior to CCE at equal compression factors. Shrink exhibits more macroblock noise, but CCE produces much more mosquito noise, and of the two I find mosquito noise much more obnoxious.
