Tracks can choose multichannel inputs (for example, an 8 channel track can monitor 8 channels of input), and record input as multichannel audio. The block of inputs monitored are sequential. To use non-sequential inputs, you can use the audio channel aliasing in the preferences, or use routing+record output as you would in 3.x. You can now choose individual audio channels (or channel pairs) from multichannel media. On each item you can specify left channel, right channel, or channel 3-64, or stereo pairs (including odd pairs such as R+3). To send multiple audio channels to the parent or master track, change the master/parent destination channel dropdown at the top of the source track I/O dialog. For example, if you have a 6-channel master, you could have one stereo track send to master 1-2, another stereo track send to master 3-4, and another stereo track send to master 5-6.

im very happy to see the v4 news, multichannel wise. some things i've found: * rightclick on VU meters (TCP) / Track VU meter - both options are dead here (disable and show 2+ channels) i cant see more than 2 channels (first two?) on the VU, even if i set it to 12. input on ch9 doesnt show up on the VU, nor the num. display. (btw the general preference of "show meters on TCP" is also dead) * are there actions to switch multichannel content to next/prev stereo / mono? i love this feature anyways. thank you for adding it.
Ok, I think I might be misunderstanding this... Audio items can now have more than 2 (stereo) channels? I could for instance, have 4 mics on a piano and record them all to one item? If I am not wrong, then holy sh*t! I guess the only problem would be how to control the levels... I guess you would need a multitrack version of chanmix2 or something like that. Cool.
This is a huge step in the right direction guys. Is it possible to configure multi channel metering (maybe using WALTER) to go with this? If we can record and play back multi channel audio, we really need to see what is going on with all those channels and preferably in the actual channels themselves and not via a plugin.

I think that "show audio from all channels" does work, it just combines the channel activity down to 2 meters. All odd channels are shown on the first meter, all even channels are shown on the second meter, and it likely just uses the highest value of any given channel at the given time.
