I've got a recorded bass track that has some notes that are louder than other notes. At the same time this bass track has a section or two that seem quieter than other sections. This bass track was recorded in 1998 on a Roland VS 1680. I have transferred the track from the 1680 to Reaper (line out on 1680 to channel 1 input Behringer xr18 to Reaper). Is there a plugin that can analyze the volume level from beginning to end of the track. Thanks, Don.....

RE: Volume/Booming Bass

You want to analyse or actually change the volume across the track? You can analyse the volume using the SWS action 'analyse loudness...' but that won't really give you any useful information when it comes to adressing these volume changes. Honestly, this is the kind of thing I use the visual aspect for. I zoom out, look at the sections, if I know that two verses should be the same volume but they are clearly not, I separate the item into it's structural chunks and use the clip gain to get a rough match. I also use item splits to alter the volume of individual notes especially on bass, but if you want you can also use the item volume automation. Another great thing to try is the vocal rider preset in ReaComp, it uses feedback compression. Works excellently on bass guitar. And if you're comfortable saving the edit, use it on a reversed item then reverse back. No chance then of killing your transients.

Can't you use compression to reduce the dynamic range, either upwards or downwards?

Thanks everyone for your help. I'll give these things a try. I need to try and tame the recordings while I'm doing them but hopefully I can fix those that are already done. Thanks, Don.....
