Hey everyone, I'm new to Pro Tools, but I've been using Fruity Loops because it is inexpensive (then I found out about Mbox.....what a deal!) for a couple of years, so I'm mildly familiar with music production. I tried to use Fruity Loops for full production, which its not really designed for, and I'm incredibly excited about diving into Pro Tools. I am more than a hobbyist in music, but less than a professional (I am a full-time student at one of the most prestigious engineering schools in the United States, which unfortunately pushes music to the back-burner too frequently). I'd love it if some of you could tell me a little bit about how you learned how to produce; most importantly the seemingly impossible task of getting a professional sounding mix. My type of music is most generally what I would call rock, but since I don't have an entire album written yet, it's kind of hard to categorize what it will be.

RE: New User

Hi, You can find a number of online resources, tutorials, and other information, many freely available, from the Education link at the top of the DUC: The Pro Tools LE Boot Camp is a great place to start, which will give you some ideas about the basics and more. Here on the DUC, you can browse the Pro Tools Host Tips & Techniques forum for tips from other users on specific things. Welcome to the DUC!

welcome to the duc doctor. other online forums can be a great source of recording/mixing advice. the duc tends to lean towards the gear, and specifically the PT, side of the equation. it's so good at that, I rarely see PT questions anywhere but here. , , all have lot's of helpful people about. more importanly, for me anyway, is the wealth of information already there that you can find by searching the archives. dont forget your public library. they might not have any books on protools but older recording books are just as good as newer ones. acoustic guitars and mics haven't changed much in the past 30 years! I think the most common advice you see is this: use your ears and trust them. advice that's harder to follow for me than it seems it would be. experiment until it hurts and if it ever stops being fun, sell me your stuff cheap. thank you. Will

I forgot to mention. I never have but I'm pretty sure you can use fruity loops in pro tools via rewire or the VST>RTAS adapter. just in case you haven't already figured it out... if you search around here it should be revealing. will
