Mixing from the outside in?

I haven't done that exact thing, but I've been known to throw a tape sim and izotope vinyl together on the master track before a mix. Gives a good 'aged' sound if you tweak it right. :) A lot of people advise against doing anything to the master track, but I think it all depends on what you want to achieve. As long as you achieve the sound you want, it doesn't matter how you get there.

Well everything comes through the master anyways so why not shape the sound that everything goes through anyway? I think the best sounds have been discovered through experimentation. Maybe you'll come up with a new way of mixing songs. I think its a good idea. An analogy. It's kind of like writing a thesis for a paper. You start with the main idea and then branch of of those ideas. The master is like the thesis and the individual tracks are like the supporting examples of the thesis. Why should mixing music be any different. Start with a main idea rough, and then mix the tracks to support that idea.
