Correct petrol cap to stop leaks

MessageAuthor

Hi, I have an early '77 245 with a Volvo branded locking petrol cap (even though the keys are Waso). The seal on the cap looks fine and it seems to be a snug fit, but when I go around corners, quite a lot of petrol leaks out of the filler. I've had a look for a replacement cap but suppliers are quoting different model years for their caps (some cover all up to '78, another covers all up to '77 etc. Is there any difference in petrol caps fitted to 240s and if so, does anyone have a brand name/supplier and model reference that they'd recommend? Thanks in advance, Aidan

There are two types, from about 78 on they are a screw in with a thread on them. The eariler type have two lugs which is what I expect yours has. Is the fuel actually coming out of the cap? If so you could try bending the lugs slightly toget a tighter fit. Mike

Utmost respect for Mike, but I tried to bend lugs on non locking 78 when it was about 4YO, and the first one snapped right off. Cost about $28AU in the early 80's. Current one OK cost 50c at scrappy. Second 240 retrofitted with later screw fitting unit when bought earlier this year, seems to be OK. Had similar problem with locker on 504 Pug as well. Tried everything including seals etc but no avail. Actually found that it was posible to rotate cap and remove even when locked, so replaced with original non locker, problem solved.

i wonder if the breather in the tank (if it has one) is blocked? ,maybe air is pushing petrol up the filler pipe and forcing it out the cap

RE: Correct petrol cap to stop leaks

For those who may be searching the forum in the future.... Mike's suggestion solved the problem - and had the bonus of being quick and free! While I had the cap apart to bend the tabs, I noticed that there's a twisted piece of metal under the rubber that acts as a sort of spring - I twisted it a bit more to raise the height of the rubber, to be on the safe side. The cap now has an audible squeak from the rubber when being tightened and best of all - no more leaks - even on a full tank. Thanks again, Aidan
