Thanks Beardy and Peter, If this task requires a special tool, then the garage I had the work done would never had used this gauge, they just tightened it as much as they could. I had a look to see where the adjustment was on the pump, I found there is bolt on the end of the pump and there is also a line marker with three lines. I tried to loosen the bolt and reduce the tensioning but for some reason there must be another bolt because I could not even move the adjustment the slightest. Yesterday I drove the car on a motorway and later I could hear the ticking noise continuosly when driving slowly up a enclosed car park drive. I think inevitably I will have to take the car for its 76K service at a Volvo dealer and tell them to also take a look at the pump belt tensioning and the ticking noise for a fixed price estimate otherwise I could possibly see another £1000 bill arising very quickly at £90/hr labour rates currently charged by Volvo!!!, for older cars surely there should be an incentive for owners to get their cars serviced at a lower rate, what do you think??? I guess it is wishful thinking it will never happen. I greatly appreciate all your help and advice. Thanks, Mike
