Wind Noise?

Hey, I have a couple of field recordings where the dumbass running the minidisc recorder (me) didn't remember those little fuzzy things you stick on the end of microphones to avoid wind noise. So they are full of wind noise! Sigh. If you're not familiar with the sound, it's like someone blowing on a microphone, only more sustained and more random. it's an annoying noise, i assure you. If you need a sample, I can provide one, but I think everyone knows that sound. So do any of you genious expert wonderful funny intelligent handsome rich pro tools gods have a secret recipe for getting wind noise out? Is there a plugin for this? I've seen that Waves has a bunch of restoration tools, but while they have one hum, click, hiss and crackle, they don't have one for wind noise. Will one of those other ones be able to remove that noise? Could one of them be modified to provide that function? I've gone crazy with EQ settings and envelopes, but the only thing I can seem do is remove the rumble and most of everything that's underneath it. Plus there's still a bunch of the crunchy upper part of the wind noise. Please help, I'll try anything, the 2 recordings I have are very special to me, and I'd really like to be able to use them somehow. Whatever the cost. Well, you know, I'm an unemployed slacker musician, so not whatever the cost, but It's very important to me. I'd be happy to buy a plugin, or I'd be happy to buy you a cup of coffee if you knew how to do it.* Thanks in advance for your help! -Olaf *(If you live in Nebraska or something you'll have to get your own flight out here and all, but when you do get here I'll buy you a cup of coffee.)

Waves Restoration. Not sure if you can download a demo or not but if you can give it a try. Allen

I know it's not what you want to hear, but I've done a lot of field recording for television and there's not much to do about it. You could cut some of the rumble out like you did, but the rest is something you have to live with.

RE: Wind Noise?

Really? It's too bad, I can't live with it, it just doesn't sound any good. I really hope someone has come up with a solution. I'd hate to lose good recordings, but I don't feel ok putting out something that sounds that bad. It's not a small thing, even with the rumble taken out with eq, it's still noticeable. It might even sound worse that way, because it doesn't sound like anything, it's very disturbing acoustically. anyway, I hope someone will have fresh thoughts on it in the morning. Guten nacht. -Olaf (Is that right?)

RE: Wind Noise?

Hello. Rabidium it depends on how bad it is and what you consider acceptable. As rogga_bogga points out, it may be unrecoverable. Just like if the audio was distorting during capture. Sometimes EQ and/or gain attenuation can help, but most of the time it is unusable. However, about the only thing I know that can help you is the Cedar line of hardware and plug ins. It can work (apparent) miracles sometimes, but here is the catch. They are quite pricey. You get what you pay for however. You may be able to rent it for a day or two just to fix your audio. Otherwise, you may have three choices. Record again, live with what you can fix or scratch the project all together. Good luck!

Greetings Rabidium, I feel for you, it's a very annoying oversight and I've done similar things. One fix may be to go to studio that has either Cedar (found in SADiE or ProTools) or NoNoise (Sonic Solutions). Jump on the phone and see if any mastering people would be willing to process your stuff for an hourly rate. It may only cost and hour of time. Best regards, Haigbabe

...like Allen mentioned, try Waves Restoration. You will be pleasantly surprised at how effective it is. I am quite sure you can elimate the wind noise with it entirely (..and without digital artifacts)

Hello. Rabidium I would be remiss if I didn't second (or third by now) the Waves recommendation. That's why I said initially that it depended on how bad it is. Waves will only go so far, and then you may need Cedar or Sonic. The good thing about Waves however, is that you can download a fully functional demo to see if you can do what you need. Good luck!
