Boost Question

MessageAuthor

My 89 740 never gets above 1/4 the way into the yellow even at full throttle. Is this normal? I know nothing about these cars, so this could be perfectly normal, but I can't imagine that it is. Another question about normal operation. This is transmission related (automatic) When starting out, it dosen't seem to want to shift up from I'm guessing 2nd, until I actually let up on the throttle. Under 60, it downshifts very easily, crusing on the highway, it is like pressing down on an egg, just a little too much pressure, and it downshifts. Strange way to describe it I know, but that is the best I can do. That is all for now, thanks in advance!

RE: Boost Question

Hi As far as the boost can go, it depends how much rpm it goes. Below 3000rpm it shouldn't go further than those 1/4. But reaching 3500-4000 you should read 1/2. I believe for an auto gearbox, only at top gear in highway is possible to get constant 4000rpm (170kph or 105-110mph), or up-hill in 1 or 2 selection. Since I'm not familiar with auto gbx, can't give good hints...but have you changed fluid recently?
