Joe, Go here for a nice explanation. I'm very happy with my Xenyx 1204 mixer (available here for $100). Using that you'd have mic preamps, a means of controlling your monitors, and the option to record multiple sources to 2-track. Had mine for 2 yrs without a hickup. Kyle

Joe, It offers DI function, but looks like it connects through USB. You don't need a soundcard if you go that route. As I understand it, there are latency issues with USB (but I can't speak from experience). If you go with the soundcard route, latency is not as much of a problem, and the Xenyx (or something similar) would also eliminate the need for a DI as it already offers that capability, further stretching your cash. I take it you already have a few cables. Kyle

As long as it has ASIO drivers it should work well with REAPER. Digidesign is kind of new on the native scene, and it shows ( cue angry lynch mob ), however, Midiman who makes a lot of their native stuff isnt. Of course they have let some turds fly too, but in general their stuff is decent That particular unit is a pretty handy all in one, that will handle your DI duties, mic pre and even monitor control. However as stated, its USB, which makes things pretty iffy Line6's toneport series will do pretty much the same set of things, with the same sort of issues. You may be able to get one of line 6's two xlr port units cheaper. If you are going to go USB, just take whichever is cheaper with the features you want If your card doesnt have a DI, the rolls matchbox or behringer DI will do fine,or you may want to make one yourself as an easy introduction to soldering and circuit analysis
I thought that Pro Tools stuff is proprietary. Like if you use the Pro Tools software you can only use Digidesigns hardware with it, nothing else. Maybe you can use Digidesigns hardware with other recording programs though? I never could understand how that company works.
