I going to get a G5 and a Digi 002. Do I need to buy the Digidesign external firewire HD (if so where do I buy it?) or are there third party HD's that work fine--if so which are they? Would like to get at least 80GB but as much as 250mb. All help would be appreciated.

You bought the Digidesign there or a third party drive? If so which one?

RE: External Firewire Drive

Don't buy the DIGI stuff...what a RIP! I would personally add another SATA internal HD into your g5. Nothing external comes close to the serial ATA speeds. However, a Firewire 800 drive will do just fine...in fact it will be great... I have two Other World Computing FW800 enclosures- they are quiet and compact. I threw in two Seagate Barracuda drives with 8 MB cache and the whole package is phenomenal. p.s. Glyph "net drives" use the same external enclosure as OWC and they use Seagate drives as well...only they cost twice the $$$ (DIGI recommends their own drives and Glyph for FW drives).

You can use ANY Firewire drive that meets these specs for Protools: 7200rpm minimum drive speed Oxford 911 chipset. Digi and Glyph drives are way overpriced, and are nothing special.
