I was wondering about the general usage of GKnot and Divx out there. Do you generally rip to 1 CD or 2 CDs? I always rip to a single CD because a) it seems like it defeates part of the purpose if I have to switch the CD during playback of a movie b) it can kill the "flow" of a film when it's interupted to change the CD c) generally, I get good enough quality from 1 cd rips, higher bitrates don't give me much of an improvement in picture quaility when watching DIVXs on a T.V. I can see if you are watching them on a monitor, then the bitrate really comes into play. But on a NTSC T.V. even a film with a low bitrate of 40, at say 512x244 res, can look pretty good. Now when it comes to a dual DVD (i.e. the Godfather II) I have no problem doing a dual-CD rip since that is how the DVD is. But if the movie is on a single DVD, I see little reason to use multiple CDs, even if it's a long film around 2 1/2 hours.

I did the Godfather trilogy and was able to fit all of them on 3 cds. Turned out pretty sweet too :) I only use 2 cd's if I what to keep the ac3 soundtrack for example. I don't enjoy switching cd's halfway through a movie though. My friend on the otherhand *always* uses 2 cd's. He even admits that a 1 cd rip of the same film would look visually the same as 2 cd rip when done right. (Depends on the movie of course) Personal preference at the end of the day. Edge

I watch all my movies on a 21 monitor so pulling the movies off the HD is easy, and besides I'm a picky bastard when it comes to quality, so I shoot for 2cd versions with AC3.

I draw the line around 2h 15min, assuming "normal" compressability.

hi, i use 2cds most of the time because i always use two languages (mp3), or if the dvd only has one language i use the ac3-soundtrack. and i don't watch the movies directly from the cd, i copy them to the hdd first, so i don't have that disturbing noise of the dvd-drive all the time and i don't need to change cds during playback. cu

I use 2 cd's on all of my Anime Movies, those need alot of bitrate! But since I use OGM now for my regular movies the Vorbis audio helps alot with smaller audio files, so no more problems doing 1 CD Rips. Also the Vorbis audio makes a difference when you have 2 languages, like most good Anime should. Do all of you guys only have 1 CD Rom drive?????? I have a DVD and a CD Burner. You place 1 CD in the DVD and 1 in the Burner. Get a nice program like Zoom Player and set up a small playlist. Boom! Your done and no more having to get up again. The switch is barely noticeble too.

Does Zoom Player support DeDynamic Amplification?

agent2099- I don't know what your regular player is, but the BS Player supports DeDynamic Amplification and also has the playlist feature. If you want to take the time to put the movies on the hard drive first, the Part 1-Part 2 transition is a bit smoother.

I agree....If I'm going more than one disc then I might as well use DVD2SVCD and make a spankin beautiful 2 disc SVCD. And I do sometimes...but nothing can beat Divx for quick and dirty nice-looking 1 CD rips. But once you get to two discs...I just don't understand the point. Macros

Another perspective.... I do 2 cd encodes as a matter of course, although there are a few films that require 3, and some comfortably fit onto 1. I am interested in getting as large a picture and as good quality as I reasonably can within these parameters. These CDs are for archival purposes only. I keep a "full size" copy on the HDD for playback purposes (no disc swaps mid-movie). Think of the backup and recovery vs online processing paradigms. Both have their place in my world. JBK
