RE: drums/mbox

You've got two choices. 1. get good with 2 mics. this requires a great room and top notch mics. 2. get a decent mixxer, and run several mics on the kit, overheads, room, kick, snare toms, hat (in order of importance IMHO) and mix them live to stereo. Either method can esult in killer drums, IF you know what you're doing, have a killer kit, drummer, room and mics.

RE: drums/mbox

dont use 57's on kick or o'heads, they are best on snare/toms. what cliffy said, get a nice big room, a mixer and some decent overheads. you can get away with 4 mics if you want. The idea with micing a kit with 2 mics is to get the room sound more than the close miced drum sound. if you are definitely stuck using 2 channels you are going to get bleed no matter what. 57's have a tight polar pattern - anything else will result in even more bleed. I would say with 2 channels you have the right mic positions but the wrong mics. with 2 mics get the drummer to hit the snare/toms harder than normal and the cymbols softer than normal. Put the kick mic out front - ie the same distance from the kit as the ohead this will help with phase problems. try using a pair of LD condensors. what were you expecting from 2 57's and an mbox? of course its gonna sound average.
