I posted/mixed audio for an industrial DVD to stereo, and now it's going in a permanent installation and they want it re-mixed in 5.1. The original was done on a Mixplus and I'll do the 5.1 mix on HD3 Accel. How do I change the I/O in my original session to do the 5.1 mix?

RE: Stereo to 5.1

Hi If you reassign all your tracks that were going to stereo ouputs to at least LCR paths, whatever was panned up the middle in stereo will now be in the center channel.Your stereo-panned stuff will remain the same. What you put in the surrounds and the sub will be up to you. If it's an industrial, the surrounds will probably be mostly music verb, unless you've got FX in the picture that actually are moving from or into the surrounds visually. The sub is always tricky because of bass management issues, but you can take a send off your stereo music tracks, bus it to an aux and low pass filter everything above 80hz or so, and feed that output to the sub channel. I usually put the send at unity, and the return around -20 or so. You don't need a lot.See how it goes, and don't get too crazy with it, as in a bass managed system everything below 100hz in the LCR will be going there as well:)

RE: Stereo to 5.1

as usual. Joe nailed it. If you have hard L/R music or ambience tracks. Duplicate them. On the duplicated tracks send them to Ls and Rs, then add about 20 to 30 milliseconds of delay ( to taste ) to the duplicated tracks. Level adjust and you've opend the mix up a bit more. You can also do some hard radical EQ to the duplicated tracks to send only bits and pieces of the ambinece or music to the rears. On the 5.1 tracks you can also buss directly to the LFE channel if need be. cheers georgia

Well Georgia, if I nailed it, it's only because what I know about bass management I learned from your article!
