I run PT 6.8.1 on Windows XP, and recently purchased a second hard drive to store my music files to keep my system drive from getting filled up. I transfered the music files to the new drive and went there to open them to make sure they worked, and they did. I then deleted the files from the system drive to free up the space. When I went back to open the files again off the new drive, they would open part way, and then say something about some of the music files being "on a volume unsuitalbe for the playback of music files"--speaking of the new drive---and ask me if I wanted to copy them to a suitable volume. If I put them back on the system drive they work fine, but that would defeat the whole purpose of getting the new drive! As far as I know the drive is the same as my system drive, only larger. I'm thinking it has something to do with how it's partitioned. When I partitioned it, I didn't know exactly how to do it, so I put it as a "simple drive" or something like that. I dont' know much about tech stuff, but need to have this resolved to use the new drive. As you can tell, I'm pretty new to all this. I've only been running PT for a couple months. Does anyone out there know what I need to do to fix this? Thanks!

Hey Wiseguy - Make sure in the Workspace window that you've got that drive set to "r," that is, record. That would be my first shot at it. Take a peek at too, maybe. Good luck! -Danji

RE: \"unsuitable drive\"

Hey, thanks for the info, but I don't think that will work for me because I'm on Windows XP! I found that thread earlier, and it perked my ears, but then I saw it was Mac stuff . It sounds like the same kind of problem, but the solution might be different for a PC. Also, I've only been into this for a couple of months. I don't even know what a "workspace window" is!!! Are you talking about the Edit window? If someone uses tech jargon without explaining, I'm not going to know what they're talking about! I've gotten to be pretty good at putting together songs and vocals on PT because I have a musical ear, but know very little about terminology.

RE: \"unsuitable drive\"

OK... First, your drive should be setup as a Basic drive. Here is some about how to do that. Next, in Pro Tools, there are many possible windows that you can view. They are all accessible from the "Windows" menu at the top of the program. The Workspace Window is accessible from that menu. Last, there is some very informative documentation installed with the program and accessible from the start menu under Digideisgn->Documentation. It would be very helpful for you to read that documentation.

RE: \"unsuitable drive\"

Yeah, that was it. I re-read what you said, and then I went into PT and changed the volume from T to R, and everything works just fine. All I had to to was click one time to fix everything--amazing! I did figure out about the basic drive thing, and changed that last night. I had it as a dynamic drive initially. Thanks ijnad51 and spkguitar--you guys were both right of course! Forgive my ignorance...you guys are the tops! Thx again!
